In late December, as summer unfolded across Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, EMS embarked on an unforgettable journey through South America. Taking advantage of both collective company holidays and two overdue vacation periods from his job, he boarded a two-day bus ride from São Paulo to Santiago, Chile, where he settled into a short-term rental apartment for a one-month stay.
On December 6, while celebrating his birthday at a cozy, open-air bar and restaurant in Santiago, EMS met a beautiful and enchanting young woman—always joyful, with stunning, large, expressive eyes that seemed to look straight into his mind, carrying a presence that felt profoundly special. She, too, was a traveler. Their connection was immediate.
Together, they ventured on a spontaneous and emotionally rich journey through Santiago, Viña del Mar, Colchagua, Mendoza, and San Juan. They shared deep conversations and unforgettable moments, celebrated his birthday and Christmas side by side, and made plans to ring in the New Year together in Viña del Mar.
But then, without warning, she disappeared—called away by an unexpected family emergency. There was no message, no goodbye—just silence. Emotionally shaken and left with unanswered questions, EMS canceled his New Year’s plans and returned to Brazil earlier than expected.
At Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago, as he waited for his return flight to São Paulo on December 31, he began writing what would become the first verses of “The Unwritten Goodbye.”
